The Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)

The Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme creates a financial incentive for owners to install eligible small-scale installations such as solar panel systems, small-scale wind systems, solar water heaters, or small-scale hydro systems. It does this by legislating demand for Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). STCs are created for these installations according to the amount of electricity they produce or displace. RET Liable entities have a legal requirement to buy STCs and surrender them on an quarterly basis.

Financial Incentives for Solar Panels

Under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme the reduction in the cost of your solar panel is not a rebate. You will not qualify for any Government-based financial recompense at the completion of any process relating to STCs.

Solar panel systems are entitled to a number of small-scale technology certificates (STCs) if the system is eligible. This is based on the amount of electricity in megawatt hours (MWh) the system generates over the course of its lifetime. In addition, your system may be eligible for Solar Credits which multiplies the number of STCs the system can receive.

New South Wales  Solar Bonus Scheme

In NSW, customers are able to connect a solar PV system or wind turbine to the grid. Check with your distributor and determine their connection and application requirements before you proceed. You should also familiarise yourself with the range of information available on all aspects of installing a solar system (see contacts below)

Currently there are no Government Feed-In tariff.

Retailers will pay 5.0 cents – 10.00 cents. You can obtain this information from your retailer or could shop around for the best offer available.

There are several benefits of installing a small-scale renewable energy system, including:

  • reduced electricity bills by installing a net metered system;
  • alternative financial incentives offered by some energy retailers; and
  • financial incentives through Commonwealth Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme.
